Is Tanzania a Safe Place to Invest? Ask the People, Not the Government

27 March, 2024 — If ever there was an East African regime that consistently manufactures headlines, false narratives, and photo ops to lure foreign investors, that regime would be the Tanzanian government. Believe it or not, for the most part, they get away with it.
But the question is, is Tanzania an investor’s haven with a stable economy conducive to investment?
The best place to find out the truth before you drop a single dollar into this wavering economy is to seek and ask investors who have had their fingers burnt by this regime, and then of course, interact with local communities online to find out what they think of their government and what it has and hasn’t done for them can be a help.
I’ll point you in the right direction just to help you get your research done, with reliable sources of information not connected with the government of Tanzania.
Sadly, the government is prone to stemming the flow of information and feeding you with unimaginable lies, and local media outlets have been state-captured, controlled, and censored by the government.
So there’s no joy there either. It’s a dead-end street.
However, there’s a lot of information to be found on X (formerly Twitter), and the best place to start is with Maria Sarungi Tsehai, a prolific activist who is instrumental in pioneering the current movement calling for change in Tanzania and an end to authoritarianism.
Maria currently has 1.2M followers and publishes in both English and Swahili, you’ll also link up with her media platform Mwanzo TV via her page.
Another interesting source for information is on Sauti Kubwa, a news platform that publishes detailed analyses of the political situation, whose founder is Tanzanian journalist Ansbert Ngurumo, who lives in exile in Finland.
In conclusion, don’t believe a word that comes from the Tanzanian government or media platforms they control under strict laws enacted specifically to restrict independent reporting. Everything they publish is censored and is pro-government. Spend a bit of time researching from the sources shared in this article, and asking pertinent questions that can help you as an investor, make an informed decision.
