Tanzania’s highly corrupt, authoritarian regime deploys police to quash planned demonstrations in Mbeya

Today, November 9th, 2023, Tanzanians inaugurating nationwide demonstrations and civil disobedience against the oppressive Samia Suluhu Hassan regime, appear to have had the police fall into their own trap when they mobilized to secure Mbeya to quash anticipated protesters. The police even surrounded the home of one of the leaders of the movement, Advocate Boniface Mwabukusi, only to find out much much later after it broke on Clubhouse, that Mwabukusi wasn’t in the house.

In a twist of fate, the police seem to have inadvertently amplified the cause with their blockade, without the citizens actually taking to the streets.

Those in Mbeya city who had no idea there was a demonstration scheduled for today, suddenly, with the heavy police presence across the city, are now fully aware of what’s happening.

In retaliation, the police have been raiding hotels and guest houses and ransacking rooms, and without a modicum of shame, arresting Mbeya residents dressed in white simply because the nationwide dress code for today’s demonstrations is white.

And what’s more, in a blitz of social media posts this hugely embarrassing turn of events for the Tanzanian dictatorship has now gone global.

I say kudos to the Sauti Ya Watanzania Clubhouse pressure group for orchestrating this ingenious plan. Well done!
